Sullivan (John L.) is born in the South End.

October 15, 1858

The son of Irish immigrants, John L. Sullivan is born at 5 East Concord Street, attends the Dwight School, goes to work at 13 in various trades, and begins bare knuckle boxing in 1878. He comes to be known as “The Boston Strong Boy,” wins his first world boxing championship in 1882,* and becomes a world-wide celebrity with a lavish lifestyle. Sullivan marries Annie Gallagher in 1882.* After losing his last championship in 1892,* he Sullivan retires to a farm in Abington, dies there on February 2, 1910, and is buried in Old Cavalry Cemetery on February 6, 1910.*
